2012

April

  • It is a pleasure to invite you to the defense of the doctoral thesis of Albert Cabedo Mas entitled "Music and social life: a study of music education and its implications in the dialogue between people and cultures." The thesis was directed by Dr. Vicent Martínez Guzmán and Dr. Antonio Ripollés Mansilla and it will be publicly defended on Wednesday 4 April at 11:00 h. at the Grades Hall of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

March

  • Mayte Carrasco (Terrassa, 1974), former student of our Master, journalist and war correspondent, will teach with Jesus A. Nunez Villaverde and Francisco Rey Marcos, directors of the Institute of Studies on Conflicts and Humanitarian Action (IECAH), the course on Conflicts and Humanitarian Action in the International Master in Peace, Conflict and Development Studies between March 20th and April 5th of this year.
    In her 18 year career, Mayte Carrasco has covered conflicts in Chechnya, Georgia, Afghanistan, North Africa, various parts of the Arab world and more recently has made ​​a courageous coverage of the conflict in Syria, where she has told us the uprising against the regime of Bashar al Assad and the harsh military crackdown in some centers of rebellion as the city of Homs.

  • Presentation of the book Communication in Action: Journalisms, Conflicts, Media Literacy and Alliance of Civilizations. The act will be this Wednesday February 1st at 7 p.m. at Babel bookstore in Castellón. The event will include a debate about the rol of communication in conflicts and peacebuilding.
    Here there is a synopsis of the book:
    This book is part of the work developed by the department for research in communication for peace of the UNESCO Chair of Philosophy for Peace and the Interuniversity Institute for Social Development and Peace-IUDESP (Jaume I University), in collaboration with the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC). From a mass media communication perspective, this volume exposes academic research and lessons learned in four areas: the mass media impact on the construction of cultural violence, alternative media for peacebuilding, media literacy and the Spirals of Peace proposal to follow the complex path towards the yearned for and encouraging Alliance of Civilizations.

  • Ignacio Martin Galán, a graduate of our Master and researcher at the Interuniversity Institute for Social Development and Peace (IUDESP) has participated in the Fourth Forum of the Alliance of Civilizations, held from the 11th to 13th of December, 2011 in Dohar, Qatar.
    At the Forum, wich was entitled “ Intercultural dialogue as a driver of development”, Martin Galán had the opportunity to present the book of the UJI: Communication in Action, edited by himself, Eloísa Nos Aldás and Fatuma Ahmed Ali, Director of the IUDESP and professor of our Master, respectively.

 

2011

December

  • Alexander Antonio Cárdenas Méndez, a current PhD student in our program, presented two academic papers. The first one was presented on November 26, at the 2011 Erasmus Mundus Global Studies Convention held at the University of Leipzig, Germany, with the tittle: "Sport for Development and Peace (SDP): A New Strategy for Social Intervention."
    The second one was presented on December 2nd at the University of Deusto, Spain, with the tittle "The Role of Football and Other Sports in Peace-Building and Development".

November

  • A group of students of our Master´s program is organizing a fund-raising event for the flood victims in Thailand. The event that is called "One Euro for Thailand" is going to be held on:
    November 3, 2011 from 14.00 to 17.00 at the Agora, UJI.
    November 6, 2011 from 11.30 to 14.00 at Park Ribalta.

  • Our doctorate program has been awarded with the excellence mention of the Ministry of Education from the Spanish government for the period 2011-2014.

September

  • To celebrate the International Day of Peace, on September 21, the students of the Master and Doctorate program organized a couple of activities at the University to raise community awareness of their role as individuals for transforming conflicts and building a less violent world.

August

  • On August 20, as part of the cultural activities carried out in 18 European Reggae Festival ROTOTOM SUNSPLASH, the students of our Master: Ioulia Lioli, Larissa Wulfert, Laura Casla & Milena Ardila and our doctoral students Raquel Reynoso & Gloria Abarca, conducted a theatre of the Oppressed performance as a tool for social justice. The presentation included the active participation of attendees and was an example of the commitment of our students for the awareness of our city´s society on peace and nonviolence.

July

  • Sophia Herrero Rico, General Coordinator of our Master and Doctorate, gave a speech at the summer course "Rights of children and education for peace" organized by the ILEWASI. In addition, several of the students of the Master worked in different workshops held in the summer course, with the aim of the promotion of children's rights, peace and multiculturalism.

June

  • From June 26 to July 1, the Research Center for Defense and Promotion of the Rights of Children and Adolescents (ILEWASI), conducted a summer course  called "Rights of children and education for peace" This event was designed by Hammad Malik, a doctoral student in our program. The course was divided into three parts: peace, child rights and multiculturalism.

May

  • The Escola de Cultura de Pau from Barcelona, has published an article about a project that is being made by Gloria María Abarca Obregon and Bahajin Said, current PhD students in our program.
    This project is called "a world painted of peace" and involves children between 6 and 13 years, from 11 countries (Mexico, Morocco, Spain, Peru, Colombia, Paraguay, United States, Guatemala, Dominican Republic Bolivia and Brazil) who design drawings, expressing their vision of peace.
    The drawings are presented later in the participating countries, thereby promoting understanding between peoples and cultures.

  • On May 8, the students of the Master conducted an act of solidarity with the Mexican people. Led by students and friends from that country, they organized a ceremony in the Peace Square, in Castellon, Spain. The aim of this act was to provide information to the people from Castellon about the conflict in Mexico, while teamed up with Mexican NGOs to send to the president of the Mexico, letters on behalf of each of the victims of  the called “war against drug trafficking”.

    It is estimated that Mexico's armed conflict has claimed the lives of forty thousand people between 2006 and 2010. Tired of this spiral of violence, the civil society in Mexico has been taking some actions to demand the Mexican authorities to stop the armed conflict and a greater commitment to address the root causes that have triggered the conflict.
    The act carried out by the students of the Master was another of those efforts made by the Mexican people to make their voice heard in order to stop the violence. By clicking here, you can see a video about the event in the Peace Square.

"Peace Movie Cycle" is an initiative by the students of the UJI Master in International Studies in Peace, Conflicts and Development, with the purpose of taking the issues discussed in the program to the Castellón Community. The cycle takes place at Prótesis Institucional, next to Espai d’Art Contemporani, Prim Street, Castellón de la Plana, Spain. Map.
  • Ayman QWAIDER, a current student of the International Master in Peace, Conflicts & Development is participating these days in an internship in the Education Sector of UNESCO. He is working with and learning about post-conflict post-disaster education.
    When you ask him about the importance of the education in conflicts transformation, he is clear: “I believe in the importance of education for transforming societies and resolving conflicts, I know this from experience”. He knows the importance of non-formal & informal education to achieve this goal, that´s why he affirms that social networking helped him to realize his right to education.

  • Hjalmar Jorge JOFFRE-EICHHORN, International Master in Peace, Conflict and Development Studies, is currently conducting a group working for peace in Kabul, Afghanistan. He and his group employ a technique known as Theatre of the Oppressed. The group re-enact actual scenes from their own lives in front of an audience, who are then encouraged to stop being spectators and become 'spect-actors' participating in the action.

    The author has just published a book about the Theatre of the Oppressed in Afghanistan.   • Fran ESPINOZA, International Master in Peace, Conflict and Development Studies, has published the paper in Spanish Pueblos indígenas: ¿Y después de la emergencia?. His work discusses social and political issues for indigenous peoples exploring their history and current situation.
